Ahmed's Evaluation

1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

As I have been doing some research on lots of different film openings, I now have an idea of the key elements that are needed in any opening of a movie. In the beginning of most films, we the audience get introduced to some or all of the main characters. This makes very clear to the audience that who and how is any character known by as the main character, one of the reason is the camera returns back the character very often. And so we tried to do the same thing in our opening of our movie. Henri, the main character wakes up early in the morning, goes outside, all of a sudden remembers his past love, in which we show as a flash back, of girl slapping him. And so he goes to the church, thinks about what he has done wrong, gets a knife out, holds it tight above his head, but we don’t actually show if he kills himself or not. Also by cinematography, we have professionally shown a range of different camera angles, such as high angle, low angle, shot reverse shot, and many more.

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Our genre is teen/horror and so I do not think it will be suitable for kids aged 14 and lower. Our 2 minutes opening film has sadness, emotions and feelings and so it is suitable for any one male or female aged 15 and over. The movie is based on a young couple; so obviously, the same age group is going to be the target audience for it. Also there is and sad/romantic music in one of the scenes, which also represents the particular social groups which is teen/horror. Another key element which made our media product which represented the teenage social group was the use of sound. Sound normally sets the mood of the scene, at first we had used a copyright music, which we found out that we are not allowed to use copyright music, but the background we had chosen was perfect for it, but unfortunately we had to remove the background music, and looked for another background music, after 2 weeks of searching for the right kind of music, we decided that, we are going to add a music which will represent the character, (Henri), and will show the audience what kind of person he was, and so we added some rock based music for the background sound.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

Because, Aftermath, is quite similar to Skins the drama series which has got the same genre type (teen drama) and is produced by Chris Clough. This gives me an idea based upon Skins the drama series that the kind of media intuitions might distribute my media product will be Secondary schools, colleges, universities and, local offices are the media institutions where we would distribute our media product. This is because; these are the places where we are mostly likely to find them, as they are our targeted audiences. Company Pictures is the Production Company used to publish this drama series, is one of the largest independent film and drama productions companies in the UK. This Company has also published other drama series such as Wild at Heart, Life is Wild, Shameless, and according to my research on this company, their main target audience are mainly teenager and some adults. We also hope that 20th Century fox to produce the opening of my film, this is because I have also been doing some research on what kind of films do 20th century films produce, and I found out that 40% are comedy films, 40% are horror films and 20% are action films. This is another way where I can find my target audience by letting 20th Century fox produce this film.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product

Teens aged 15 and would be the best target audiences for this 2 minutes opening scene of the film Aftermath. This is because, before making the opening scene, we as a group planed that we wanted people who are mature and who can easily understand what mostly happens when he/she are in love. And so after weeks of research we decided that teenagers who are over 15 and over must be able to understand and feel what is happening through, emotions we have added using some of the key elements of the media language, such as cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene and editing. Teenagers normally like drama series like skins, this is because it shows the audience the life based upon a group of teenagers, and the way they all behave and react to things ate all true. The trueness of it drags them to keep watching from one series to another, and so far there are 4 series of skins. We are using the same concept in Aftermath of using 2 teenagers who were in deeply loved each other, but later they break up for some reason. This is a typical thing as a teenager, and so the audience as teenagers love to watch it, because it’s majorly true.

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

We attracted our media product to the audience by using the media language, such as cinematography, sound, mise-en-scene and editing. For cinematography, we used high angle shot (to show which class the character is), mid range shot (to show the action happening), close up shot (to show emotions, and face expressions on the character’s face), and many more. For sound we used, ambient sound (the sound you as an audience expect to hear), sad/romantic music (to show what he character is feeling towards another character), background rock music, (shows the type of a person the character is.) madly in love, but very much in love. For Mise-en-scene (all the things you see in the scene), we used clothes, a room, a church, a knife, which I am sure the audience must of found very scary, as they don’t actually see what happens at the end of the scene. I have also found a great video on youtube, which deeply explains the Filmmaking Techniques used.

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I have learnt that there are lots of ways in which different media product are shown, e.g. these days you can watch a movie, where you want and when you want, where as in the olden days, they did not have this technologies. E.g. in an Iphone, there is multimedia in it. You can watch movies, make a phone call, send an e-mail, listen to music, and browse the internet and many more. Also for making the 2 minutes of the opening movie, we had learnt how to use editing software, for graphics, we had to learn how to use Photo Shop, which is known as the best graphical software to use. Using the blogs, to keep thing, using embedded videos, so we can shown then on our blogs. Using the video camera with a tripod was another process, in which we had leant about. One of thing which I found very difficult was using the video editing software. I have used professional video editing software called Sony Vegas Pro, but for this our media product, we had to use the provided video editing software which was Adobe Premiere and it was completely different to what I had being using for home use. There was only one thing which was the same, the layouts of the tools in the program. But then I had been playing around with it for couple of weeks, I now do know the basics of this program with the help of my teacher and my team, Shamedia.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

I feel that holding a video camera and just taking some random shots is not the way of filming, there is a purpose for each shot which represents something. Such as low angle majorly shows that a character or that object is worth less, has not got the authority, or is a lower class person. Terminology is very important in order to do media studies, without it, things would get really complicated. And so that’s what I have learnt in the preliminary task. Form there it was a huge step for me to learn how to edit any footage properly, as before I didn’t use any effects, captions, transitions for my home made videos, but now as I have learnt that these key elements are very important, I will be using them next time even ever I will be making home made videos. Another major thing I have improved on is the way I Photoshop things. Having some experience of using Photoshop is a very good thing as it helped us with our Production logo, and Movie title logo. I didn’t not take very long to think about a professional looking Production logo, as it took me around 2 weeks to complete the Production logo, where as making the Movie title logo was a nightmare and took us several months to finalize the Movie title logo. This is because we made lots of changes to it. As you see the pictures below (labelled by order). (Picture number 1) was our very first creation; it has lots of blood splattered with a plain background. Instead of the letter “T” (aftermaTh) I planned to use a knife, this is because in our opening scene we do use a sharp slaughtering knife. First I had to search on Google for the perfect knife which took me around half an hour. And so I found this, (Picture 2) a great knife. Then I had to decide how I am going to use it. So then I decided to crop out the knife then rotate it 25 degrees. And then I resized it so it matches with other letters of Aftermath. Unfortunately my other two Shamedia group members Henri and Sultan thought that the blood spatter was a bit too much, so I removed it, but then it looked to basic. And so we decide to change it completely. The process of thinking started again, where I and sultan thought of another idea of having something really touchy and cheesy. It was an idea which we think would make the audience melt, and idea which would draw the attention of the audience toward it. And ideas of making the audience feel for this movie. It was a bright red rose flower, (Picture 3). As you can see now we have removed all the blood splatter and the font of the title name. Again I searched for a bright red flower, but I could not find any so I went and took a picture from a pot of rose flowers. And photoshoped it, now it had this feeling of love, feeling of emotions and much more to it. Then I was playing around with different fonts, and so Henri thought this font wound suit it, so I asked my teacher if she thought it was good or not. When she saw it, I could easily tell that she loved so and so, I planned to use mixed colours to give it a professional look. Sadly we had another problem, the critics though the style of the movie logo did not suit the opening movie scene, so now we had to change it again. Because the critics wanted that went with the opening scene, I had came up with another great idea of taking a picture of the location where we shot Henri confesses in church in depression, and using it as a creepy background. So I went and took a picture of the church, and made it into black and white. When my teacher saw it, she got really excited and gave me a bit of advice of using the feathering tool, as it makes it look like a ghost effect and blends the blackness to the dark background colour. I decided to keep the same font, and I really wanted to give it a bit of blood effect, so again I used on of the brush tools, set its diameter, choose the right blood colour for it, and splattered underneath the movie title. Now I had good feedback coming from everyone, all the teachers, other group members and especially the target audiences.

8) How did the feedback you received help you to make a better film?

We posted 2 x 2 minutes of our opening scene. This is because in our first post of our 2 minutes opening scene we received some feedback which we as a group though were right and need some changing, so we decided to make some changes to our 2 minutes opening scene. Here are the feedbacks below for our first post of the 2 minutes opening scene.

Really good work guys. The music is really effective and the shots are all continuous.
I thought the whole clip had a lot of walking in it which can make it seem a little boring but for a movie opening the editing is very good and precise and it was interesting to watch.
Well done guys :)

Mrs Downes said:
Graphics- GREAT
Opening- GREAT
Too much black and white, try to add some saturated colour instead.
Need to be exactly 2 minutes

Jenny said:
needs to have less walking and more colours. Otherwise it’s very good.
I loved the aftermath with the bright red flower.

Vidur said:
Increase the music slowly at the beginning of the scene. Other than that GREAT!

Pietro said:
like the aftermath, it looks good the caption should of been in a different style.

Lisa said:
it’s too long and feels a bit boring because it’s just a guy getting up and walking to some place, however the bit where the girl slaps the guy is amazing.

Kim said:
needs more info about the girl (Lisa), the rest is all good.

Gabi said: I like the bit when Henri raises the knife above his head. As it create real tension.

So now we have decided to add 20th Century fox animation to make it look more professional, and we changed our main background music because the music we choose before was copyrighted so we had to look for a copyright free music which would suit the genre of this opening scene and finally we changed the title logo for the film “Aftermath” now it looks more creepy and attractive.

Aftermath Evaluation (Sultan Mackinnon)

1. In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Our task was to make a 2 minute opening scene, at first we had a bunch of random ideas that we jotted down on paper. At the end we came up with a stereotypical teenage love story. Aftermath is a dark teen drama, which are about two teenagers who are madly in love. The two lovers have a strong relationship between them, but for Henri that was not enough. While Henri and Lisa have been seeing each other Lisa finds out that his beloved boyfriend has been cheating on her; so Lisa decides to pay a visit to Henri and as seen in the opening scene Lisa hits Henri with a cold hearted slap. Now that Henri has experienced this unpleasant encounter with his dear lover, he goes through a time of depression and is stuck in a deep hole.
In many ways our product is very similar to Twilight, for example our storyline varies quite a lot from Twilight for instance the love story and conflict between the two genders are still there, but the vampire twist is removed, so if you think about it Twilight is just another stereotypical love story with vampires and wolves. In Twilight costume was a big factor throughout the film, my partners and I analyzed teen drama movies such as Twilight, 17 Again, Sex Drive and Superbad. The movies that I have listed above have many characteristics that are similar such as costume; the majority of these films have a specific costume to represent the characters so we did the same with our actor and actress.

Characters:
Henri Yueksel as himself

Lisa Mitchell as herself

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Aftermath is a dark teen drama which is about a young teenage girl and teenage boy. In Aftermath the social group that we represent are teenagers and their love problems in life. We represent the teenagers in our movie through Mise-En-Scene, Sound, Cinematography and Editing. If you look at Lisa closely she is wearing school uniform so this implies that she is a student and also a teenager. The teenage girl from Twilight (Bella) is similar to Lisa; Lisa. In Twilight Bella’s school does not have a school uniform but the fact that she goes to high school implies that she is a teenager.

Lisa and Henri

Bella and Edward

Sound was a big factor in our media production, when we watched the opening scene of Twilight there was music in the background; this was to set the mood for the audience for the next scene. When we started to put all the footage together we decided we wanted something slow, we tough about a song by Kings Of Leon called Closer, but we found out that we were not allowed to use copyright music so therefore we had to create a composition or download a non copyright music. We noticed that movies like Harry Potter and Twilight had their own original soundtracks and compositions, at the beginning we thought about doing this, but unfortunately we did not have enough time to do so.

Kings Of Leon Only By the Night (Closer song that we used)

When we were editing our movie for the scene were Henri gets slapped we increased the volume of the slap to make it convincing so that the viewers had a rough idea of what was happening between Lisa and Henri.

Increasing Slap Volume; also shows coldhartness of Lisa

The editing in our movie explains the opening scene and represents Henri and Lisa in many different ways for example, for example Lisa is portrayed as cold hearted in the 2 – minute sequences unlike Henri who is hopeless. We don’t really show a lot of scenes with Henri and Lisa; this is so that we get our audience to think about what has happened between Henri and Lisa in the past, it is a bit like the Twilight saga where the opening scenes are the ending ones and that is what we aimed to achieve.

Adobe Premier Element 2.0 (Editing Software that we used)

The Cinematography in our movie shows and expresses the depression that Henri is going through, for example when Henri is in the small church and the camera is at a point of view and you can see the reflection of Henri’s face form the knife that he is holding. Mise-En-Scene is also mixed with Cinematography in this scene because of the darkness in the room and the unique camera angles.

Point Of View Shot

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

When we researched films that have a similar gender to ours we only really found one film that had the closest similarity; this film was Twilight. Twilight was distributed by Summit Entertainment so we presumed that if we gave our synopsis for our story to Summit Entertainment them it might be possible. My group had researched Media Institutions such as New Line Cinema and the films that they have distributed where varied, for example horror films such as Friday The 13th was distributed by them. In Friday The 13th the only real similarity that our product has is love relationship with the teenagers. 17 Again was also distributed by New Line Cinema. 17 Again is a teenage comedy drama so it is different from other films. At the end we decided to think about what we though would be a good Media Institution to distribute our product, so we thought of 20th Century Fox. The reason we chose 20th Century Fox is because it is one of the most well know distribution companies in the world and it also has relations to companies such as Fox Atomic, Fox Interactive, 20th Century Fox Television, 20th Century Fox Animations and so on.
We thought that if we ask 20th Century Fox to distribute our product then it would advertise our work in the television programmes that I have listed above. This would not only increase the popularity of our product but also give our product a chance because there are a lot of competitors around the world.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?

Aftermath is a dark teen dram; Twilight is also a dark teen drama and it mostly attracts teenagers and women; because our product is similar to Twilight we believe that our product will attract many young teenagers and also women. Twilight does not only attract women but also men, the main reason for that is that Twilight has an attractive teenage actress and I think that because we have two attractive actors and actress we should be able to achieve the same goal as Twilight.
Films like Harry Potter and Twilight have SFX such as flying, jumping and fighting large monsters, these types of things attract young people because it has a lot of action and drama, unfortunately our opening scene does not have these SFX so it cuts down the number of audience that watch our movie however I am sure that if we had enough money and could continue the story we would use some of these things. A lot of people around the world are attracted to stereotypical storylines that are based on teenagers, this is probably because the older generation would like to know what it is like to be a teenager in this generation or maybe to relive and also remember what it felt like when they were.

Teenagers

Cue to see Twilight

5. How did you attract/address your audience?

Aftermath is a dark teen drama; at the beginning our genre was horror, but however we found this difficult to do, so we changed our genre to a dark teen drama, which is most similar to Twilight (New Moon). Because Aftermath and Twilight (New Moon) have a same type of genre (dark teen drama) we have minor similarities, for example the audience that we are trying to attract and address are teenagers and also there are two couple madly in love, we also attracted our audiences by making our actor and actress wear brand name clothes such as Abrecrombien & Fitch or Polo (Laugh Lauren).

As you can see the actors is wearing brand named clothes

In most of our scenes we don’t have the two characters talk because then it would have given the storyline away, and our task as a group was to get the audience to be drawn in and wonder what’s going to happen. Our theme colour throughout the scenes are black and white, this is so that the mood of throughout the scenes merge with the genre. Because our film is based on teenagers we wanted to attract a wide range of teenagers (ages from 12 to 18), so we decided to not put any sexual scenes or swearing, we did this so that we could attract as many different audiences as possible. To achieve this we had to go to the bbfc (British Board Of Film Classification) website to find out what kind of factors were needed (visa versa) to conform to our genre (dark teen drama).

Our Goal

6. What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

What I have learned about technologies from making our product is that good research is important, for example to finding out what kind of media institution such as 20th Century Fox, Summit Entertainment, Spyglass Productions would distribute our product around the world. To make our media product as realistic as possible my group analyzed and researched what kind media institution distributes our types of films; for example Twilight was distributed by Summit Entertainment so we though of doing the same.

My greatest difficulty using technology for our media product was using the software called Photoshop. I have used Photoshop in past years, but only the old version so I had some difficulty but not huge ones. To make our Title for our film as stylish and as realistic as possible we researched different movie titles such as Harry Potter, Twilight Saga, More Than A Game and so on.

Film Titles (Front Cover)

Twilight "New Moon" (Dark Teen Drama)

Film Title

Harry Potter (Teen Fantasy Drama)

Trailer

More Than A Game (Documentary)

Film Title

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Throughout our media production what I have learned to use very well is Photoshop. At the beginning of our media product I was new to Photoshop, but with luck my group had two experienced people that used Photoshop and they were Ahmed and Henri. My friend Ahmed was the person who made the designs up for our title and his first logo was the picture that you see below.

THIS IS OUR FIRST TITLE THAT WE CREATED AND USED, BUT AS A GROUP, AND WITH MRS. DOWNSE’S HELP WE DECIDED THAT THE TITLE DID NOT MATCH OUR FILM.

Because our first Title did not work we changed it, but this time we all had a go at using Photoshop and our second Title that we created looked like this.

THIS WAS OUR SECOND TITLE THAT WE CAME UP WITH; AS YOU CAN SEE WE CHANGED EVERYTHING SUCH AS THE KNIFE AND ASLO THE DESIGHN OF THE TEXT. WE THOUGH THAT THIS WOULD BE OUR FINAL LOGO, BUT IT DID NOT PLEASE OUR VIEWERS ENOUGH IN OUR CLASSROOM, INCLUDING TEACHERS LIKE MISS BLACK; SO WE THEN DECIDED TO RE-DU THE LOGO. WE DECIDED THAT THE ROSE HAS NOTHING TO DO IN OUR MOVIES SO THEN WE DELETED IT AND DID NOT INCLUDE IT IN OUR THIRD AND LAST TITLE FOR OUR MOVIE.

When we were making our Title for the third time we didn’t want any mistakes, so we went back to our media project and researched what we could include in our Title instead of a rose. At the end we decided to include the Michal Kirk (the small church) and leave the design of the text as it is. As I was the most experienced with the editing program (Adobe), my group changed what they did so Henri went off to fish our opening scene and Ahmed and I started on our new Title.
STEP 1

STEP 2

What myself and Ahmed have done here is change the colour of the picture
to black and white. The reason we decided to do this is so that our media product
had some kind of connection with our Title.

STEP 3

In the pictures above myself and Ahmed have made the edges ghost like. This is
To give our title a mysterious look which I believe that we achieved.

THE FINISHED TITLE

8. How did the feedback you received help you to make a better film opening?

Our first project was about 2 minutes and 30 seconds long, but before we wanted to post our product we decided to get feedback for our very first project. Meny said that it was too long and the walking scenes were boring so we decided to cut the long walking scenes and speed up the walk. This helped us to cut the time up to 2 minutes and 12 secnds so we improved in a small section. After we posted the produbt into our blog we got 6 comments which said:

Our teachers (Mrs. Black and Mrs. Downes) decided to give us constructive critisism, they said:

Mrs. Downes: Originally I felt that the storyline was weak; I thought it was very well filmed but that Lisa did not appear enough and I did not understand the storyline. The graphics were good and the shots were great - like the reflection in the knife shot.So I told the group what I thought and they made some fundamental changes.

Mrs. Black: I thought that the graphics did not have enything to do with the film and also the title does not match the story; however the way the boys filmed and edited their product was very well done. The music that they put on was very good however it was copyrighted by Kings Of Leon therfore they were not allowed to have that in their product, but I am sure that they will improve on the critisim that I have given theme.

When we reproduced our second product we knew there was much to imrpovce on and the feedback helped us especially Mrs. Downses and Mrs. Blacks. We knew the walking scene was still to long so we cut the unesisary scenes and choosed the most importand angles for the walk and also added music to make it as interesting as possible.

Personal Evaluation Henri Yueksel

· In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Shamedia Productions has put a lot of effort in the short opening of our movie “Aftermath”. First of all we tried to compare our opening to other openings of Hollywood movies. Why Hollywood movies? Because they include a list of points that makes a good movie attracting a big number of audience because of its “mainstream-like” build-up. While filming we took notice of the points that have to be in the opening, such as the story line and the different camera shots/editing that affect the whole movie. Our final result is very good and we are very happy about what we achieved.
Our opening is very experimental, the genre is a mix of two genres that do not really fit together and the storyline is very extreme compared to other teenage dramas. We tried to make the opening really special so that the people can tell, 'this isn't just and ordinary movie'. The filming methods are very important in this case, we try to make the pictures/shots tell the story and not through the actors.

For example the movie 'Irreversible' (2002) by Gaspar Noé is very special in the way that the movie has been filmed. The filming technique is different than ours but the shots tell the story as well sometimes, for e.g. a person is being filmed in a bizzarre way and you can actually characterize this character only while looking at him and at the way the camera shot is taken and the movement of the camera while filming. It is really difficult that filming method that's why I embed the trailer of Irreversible. It is a very violent and bizzarre movie, it has been played at the 'festival de Canne, and a lot of people went out of the theatre while the movie was played because there is a lot of violence and other scenes that are relied to perversion. The movie is really good, because of the special filming method and storyline, it is really realistic and shocking at the same time, but that is the special aspect of this movie and through these aspects the movie becomes very special, like a piece of art, everyone has a different taste and criticizes the artwork differently. The storyline can't be compared with our opening/movie, the comparison is just to show how the use of filming methods is shown in 'Irreversible'.

I couldn't embed the video because the link has been disabled. Here's the URL to the opening of 'Irreversible'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2gsz_sPTshk&ytsession=XAGEHK7Oa6QQMvcc-p2Y_fPTlW0PJs-m6pKTT204nBEnaVKPV3MrQwVxCDFoGBxwj6dQRfjXpq-_HOl0T9WuUU8K7f9jGdMqdrjUQ7zesIt37M0nUR_2A3z6Q2lWWfIiiSJkcs4dRG6CuB3H0fLveo8fTlBigJpGqFa0OF3loC9RtWscA5yi2Lfe0YBx4byOXUDZisMM1s85bCsHdVGYJJOgKk7kfPeGsqWhxJQ-yuBgS0X8pcq75eHwC8vyvoyeMNDb56A1E6M

· How does your media product represent particular social groups?

First we wanted to do a horror movie, but after a while we noticed that it wasn’t as easy as it looks. In horror movies there is often a lot of sfx etc. So we had to find another genre. We decided to do a teen/love drama because it was easier to represent different situation with camera shots and/or props, they would make the story interesting/thrilling while in horror movies often sfx are the main characteristic that makes a horror movie scary/thrilling. So we started to film and we achieved the representation of age and situations that teenagers confront, very well. Our opening contains a love story with normal teenagers, wearing normal clothes and acting like normal people while confronting different situations in their daily routine. The story might be a little bit exaggerated, but we think that is more of a positive aspect, it brings the little extra that should be in every movie.
The opening can be compared for e.g. Twilight etc. it is not a copy of it and there are no fictional creatures in our opening such as vampires and werewolves, but it can be compared with the dark ambiance that is constant during the whole opening, and that this ambiance is created by the misery of one young adult character.

On this picture you can see the young actor wearing clothes with a brand, that represents as well the fact that this is a stereotypical teenager.

In this screenshot, you can see a teenage couple holding hands what is really common in this age. Again a stereotype of youth, young couple in love holding hands.

A good comparison for our opening could be the teenage horror/drama 'Twilight'. The story has nothing to do with our storyline but the representation of the characters is nearly the same as in ours. The main characters are normal teenagers, their clothing can't really define their social class and neither can their way of acting define which class they belong to. That's a big plus for the movie because every single teenager is able to identify themselves in the movie through the different characters, that means it will attract and address a lot of people all over the world, and will even attract the adults because it might remind them of their youth.

· What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

There is a lot of choice of different media institution, all of them are good in different categories of marketing/image.
We’ve chosen 20th century fox because it is one of the leading media institution, it would give our movie a big push because of its popularity and it’s good distribution. First I thought it wouldn’t fit the genre because 20th century fox publishes almost only mainstream/Hollywood movies, what contradicts our movie genre, our movie isn’t really mainstream, but we are success oriented so that’s why we picked 20th century fox. For a starting movie production company we want to push our image to the maximum and try to attract all different class and age of people.
Today it is nearly all about business and image, as you can see 20th century fox have got their own interactive homepage that looks really good, and it contains a lot of publicity for movies coming out, another big plus for big media institutions, it shows that their movies “always” have a lot of success even if it’s not one of the best movies, they’re still played in a lot of theaters.
For example “Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief”, who would like to watch this kind of movie? The storyline is more than weird and it doesn’t seem like it would be a good movie, but this movie is actually played in more than 85% of the cinemas in the USA, why? First of all because of the adverts and publicity for the movie, as well as the actors that are well known, another point to attract a lot of people. When you actually watch the movie you’ll understand while this movie will be a big success even if might not be that good. The special effects and the whole scenario of a movie is very important as well to attract and address different social groups, that can actually be addressed as well through the website -> Adverts.

· Who would be the audience for your media product?

I think our movie won’t be suitable for children under 12. There is practically no violence in our movie, but the situations that the teenagers are in might be difficult to understand for most of the under 12 year olds. I think everyone above this age would enjoy the movie because of its realistic storyline. The main target audiences are teenagers because the story talks about teenagers and their life and problems, this kind of movie is very popular because the teenager might be able to compare themselves with the teenagers in the movie, while they are confronting similar problems and teenagers of every class are target audience.

· How did you attract/address your audience?

First of all the actors are very important to be able to attract and address the target audience. We tried as well to tell an important part of the story in the opening, using shots, music, editing to explain what’s going on. There is not much talking in the opening because it would tell too much; the opening is already pretty packed with the introduction of the story.
Our blog contains as well a lot of information during our production that may attract a lot of people.
But the main attraction is this very special kind of genre that we mixed together to get our “own” genre. The actors can be identified and categorized into different social groups that may address different people such as teenagers, upper/middle/lower class. You can’t really define the class of the actors, that might as well address a lot of people through the unspecific representation of social classes.

This screenshot shows how "Lisa" slaps "Henri" because they "Henri" did something that hurt "Lisa's" feelings. This is a stereotypical situation that is very common under teenagers, so that nearly every teenager is able to identify themselves with the characters. In principal it is the genre and the storyline that should attract the people and as well the actors that can be classified as the "average teenager" what balances everything out, so that nearly all social classes are able to identify themselves with the characters and/or the storyline.

· What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

I already knew about editing and creating a title on photoshop, but I learnt a lot about filming for e.g. camera angles and how to make the shots interesting and meaningful. I also learnt about target audiences and how the movie should address/attract the people, obviously you can’t do a movie trying to address/attract every single social group etc. that wouldn’t work respectively the movie wouldn’t be very good.

Here for e.g. is a screenshot of our production logo "Shamedia Productions" through our knowledge that we already had before starting the media coursework we where able to make a simple but at the same time professional logo with photoshop.

We put as well sliding titles in the intro of our opening, that makes it look really professional and also introduces the different actors, editors etc.

· Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

The preliminary task was a great introduction to media, we learnt a lot about filming and camera shots so that we where able to use it in our movie opening. Even if the preliminary task was an easy task, we learnt a lot from it. For example we had apply shot/reverse/shot and all the important filming methods that we needed for being able to make our film opening or even a whole movie. We also learned how to make simple shots meaningful without people talking, only through filming from a precise camera angle. The shot would then explain to the audience what’s happening, for e.g. filming an important person coming out of a car -> starting filming the bottom of the car, while the important character is getting out of the car, only his foot is being filmed (the camera might zoom out at this point).
Through the different aspects of filming we learned how to do "proper" filming, even the preliminary task was a great basic start for filming.

Here's a screenshot of the program (Adobe Premier Elements 2.0) I used for our preliminary task and as well for our coursework. We had not a lot of problems using it because I had already some experience using editing programs from the past, but there where still some minor problems we had to deal with.

· How did the feedback you received, help you to make a better film opening?

Here are some feedbacks that we took in account while editing our opening:

Lisa Mitchell: Really good work guys. The music is really effective and the shots are all continuous. I thought the whole clip had a lot of walking in it which can make it seem a little boring but for a movie opening the editing is very good and precise and it was interesting to watch. Well done guys :)

Mrs Downes: Graphics- GREATOpening- GREAT Too much black and white, try to add some saturated colour instead. Need to be exactly 2 minutes

Jenny: needs to have less walking and more colours. Otherwise it's very good. I loved the aftermath with the bright red flower.

Kim: needs more info about the girl (Lisa), the rest is all good.

A lot of people talked about how our opening contains too much walking bits, we the feedback in account and cut quite a lot of walking even though we wanted to make the walking bit "meaningful" by making it very special through editing and the additional background music.
Mrs.Downes told us to shorten the opening so we had to cut a lot of walking bits.
Mrs.Downes mentioned as well that our opening contains a lot of black and white parts and less colour, that's what we wanted to achieve, the ambiance shouldn't be happy at all and the black and white effect should represent the sadness of the main character. It is more of an experimental opening than the ones of "mainstream-like" movies.
Except of that we didnt change a lot, we left the opening how it was because we think it is pretty good how we managed the whole task.

Group Evaluation

At a micro, technical level, how well did you observe the conventions of continuity, the language of film and the grammar of the edit?

In our two minute opening of the scene we wanted our media product to be as realistic as possible. We tried to achieve this by making sure that the mise-en-scene was right, for example the costume, light and so on. In our movie our biggest challenge was to try and make as all the scenes were taken in one day; costume was minor challenge because we had to get the actors to always put the same clothes so that it gives the viewers a sense that the scenes are based in one day. For our media product we took a lot of camera shots in different days therefore this meant that the shots that we took were mixed up, so when we started editing we had to rearrange the different scenes to the right places.

How many mistakes did you make, and did you improve in the main task having made errors in the preliminary exercise?

When we first made our preliminary task we did not take enough shots and the lighting was poor because we positioned the cameras against the sun and the doors where another factor why the lighting changed. While filming our main task, we took account of the lighting and tried to use the sun to our advantage.
We also made a decision that we would take the shots outside in one day; this would not affect the lighting through our opening scene of our movie.
While filming we tried to obtain as many shots as possible to make our opening scene as effective as possible.

At a more symbolic, macro level, how does your fiction film reflect or challenge the conventions of the genre or type you are working in? Will it fulfil the ‘contractual’ nature of film genre or will it subvert expectations deliberately?

First our main task should have been carefully thought through because we made the first mistake by choosing the wrong genre. Our first idea of genre was an opening of a horror drama, but we over a period of time we had to change our genre due time pressure. We started filming and made out that our genre is going to be a teen drama, because of the clear idea we had about the story that we hadn’t had while trying to film a horror drama. While filming our main task with the idea of genre we are going to use, we had no problems to figure out how we are going to film the next shots.
We represented teen drama with several techniques such as having a young and handsome actor and a beautiful actress (who is so annoying). The two teenagers represent a stereotypical couple. Once the young girl broke up with her boyfriend he then goes through a phase of misery that might lead him to his death, but this is unknown to the audience.

Are there any elements of deliberate pastiche or parody, where you ‘play’ with the genre’s codes and history? Are there any intertextual moments where you hint at a reference to another film?

There is no parody of any other movie, but our opening is like a typical love drama, it is really cliché like.

What kinds of audience pleasure are you trying to provide, and how confident are you that you have delivered on this promise?

The audience that we are wanting to pleasure are women and teenagers. We think that women will be a good target audience because they are more sensitive and will be attracted to these kinds of films, unlike men who are more masculine and are attracted to violent films rather than romantic. I believe that this film will attract many teenagers for several reasons such as the story, which is about a young teenage boy who is madly in love with a girl, these types of films attract a lot of teenagers because there is an interest in teenagers that they have on these types of storyline.

How did you manage the group dynamics, equipment and resources, interim deadlines and the necessary collaborative nature of film making?

As we began filming we didn’t plan the work well, we didn’t really know where to start, how to film and who’ll be the actor(s). We changed the storyline several times, as well as the genre of our movie. We had to deal with a lot of problems till we got to our final choice (teen drama). First of all we started filming different scenes to get ideas how we could effectively start our film opening. We chose one of the first shots we took and started filming the rest of our opening. Only with a few shots we made out the whole storyline of the movie that is really complex and not easy to understand what is very unlikely for a teen drama. We used different methods to get to different view of shots and accomplished everything with success. We cut the little film clips together so it fit’s perfectly together and we tried to make the shots tell the story instead of a person talking through the whole opening, that might look special compared to other movies, but that’s what we wanted to achieve. We organised everything very well at the end, because at the beginning we had quite a lot of organisation problems with who would film, act, edit, update the blog, storyline etc. We started with a lot of confusion and problems but we managed to solve all of these problems. Everyone did a bit of everything, we shared our knowledge to improve our opening, for e.g. if someone was better at designing the production logo the others got shown how to do it so we where able to help out each other in every task. We started filming way too fast so we finished earlier compared to the other groups. We didn’t know what to do after we “finished” our opening, but after a while realized that there where some mistakes in our opening such as copyrighted music. Trying to improve our opening took us again back and we had to redo some tasks, such as the film title.

What health and safety and logistical problems did you solve?

First of all we had to make out what our genre is going to be. We had a lot of organisation problems at the beginning as we already said. The main problem was finding the perfect genre for our movie and which actors we are going to use to make it look like a very good teen drama. We had to organise the actors so they would both be able to film at the same time, and be wearing appropriate clothing what wasn’t as easy as we thought. But after a while we organised ourselves and found a way to manage the given task.
One other problem we had to solve later on is that we used copyrighted music without noticing that we weren’t allowed to it. So we had to find an un-copyrighted track that would fit to the opening sequence of our movie. We took a lot of time to find a good music track that actually fits to the opening, the copyrighted song was just so perfect that we couldn’t really find a good substitution, but we had to and found a music track that fitted to our movie’s opening, but still wasn’t as good as the copyrighted track what made our opening so good.
How did you organise your human resources – the people involved in the production?
Our main problem was organisation like said before. We had some problems finding the second actor and planned to have a third actor but we changed then
Our story again and needed only one additional actor (2 actors). After that we had not much problems with our human resources and could film continuously without a problem.
The actors didn’t have to learn a lot of text because we wanted the shots to explain the story instead of someone speaking the whole opening through, so we didn’t have problems with learning text or even acting.

How did you manage actors, locations, costumes and props? Remember that deciding NOT to use a particular strategy [e.g. not to use any props] is also a creative decision.

That was one of the most important points in our opening. Without any good props and locations the story couldn’t be told by only showing good shot’s without much talking. We had to think clever and find the perfect locations fitting to our movie. The locations where at first Henri’s flat (mixed common room of one of the boarding houses) and then we moved on to a long walk along the Silent Walk (school campus) and finished with the ending scene in Michael Kirk’s chapel that gave a perfect feeling for sadness and depression. With the long walk along Silent Walk we tried to explain the sadness and depression of the main character (Henri) who was really sad after breaking up with his girlfriend, the slow and long walk explained everything, without any talking only a light, sad ambiance background music and the main character’s footsteps along the Silent Walk, alone.

Our main and only prop was a big kitchen knife. The knife was a symbol for anger, pain, love, sadness and suicide, even if the a kitchen knife is more symbolizing violence but as well pain, we thought it would fit more for a method of suicide than hanging, taking poison or whatever kind of other methods. The kitchen knife should make the audience believe that he will kill himself for sure, seeing such a big knife can really give a special feeling while watching someone lifting it as he would try to kill himself.

The costumes that we wanted to use for the opening are casual teenager clothes. All of the clothes are the actors own and that gives another realistic feeling that we really wanted to show, like a normal situation in life. But we tried as well to use more black coloured clothing to make the right ambience, and it would have a better contrast while changing the film bits to black and white.

We had problems to find actors but could solve that problem after a while. The actors didn’t have to learn a lot of text because, like I already explained we wanted the shots to tell the story for us, something that is not very common in today’s film industry, but I’ve already seen that in several movies (mostly unknown movies/ not mainstream -> Hollywood).

How did storyboarding and creating a shooting script work in practice? Did you make creative decisions to depart from the original plan? For what reasons and with what outcomes?

Personally we thought that the storyboarding/creating a shooting script wasn’t helpful at all. The storyboard might have been a little help but how can we know how our film is going to be like if we didn’t even start filming?
Our method was to find inspiration through different, mostly random shots taken by our group. That’s how we started progressing and seeing our storyboard virtually in our mind. We imagined our story, every member in their way and started to collect the ideas of every member of the group. It might sound very difficult to make a story with only a few ideas but we had the perfect ideas and put them together like a puzzle.
We processed through our task with an incredible speed, we also did a few mistakes probably because of the pace we had but the end product that came out was really impressive and we where proud of what we achieved.
Our end product is like a piece of art, you can’t really tell if it’s bad or good, you’re decision if you like it or not.

Although time management may seem a less exciting aspect of the creative media practice, it is possibly the most important – how did you manage your time, and with what success?

When we first started our editing we realised that we had too many shots to deal with, so we deleted the shots that were not needed and then started editing our film. When we where half way through of finishing our film we realised that we it was too long, but we waited until we finished our whole media product. At the end we found out that it has to be 2 minutes long, but however our film was 2:43 minutes long; because of this error we had to cut down the scenes that were not needed, this summed up us deleting most of our shots so we chose the best scenes that fitted together and cut down the time to 2:12 minutes which was fine.

How did digital technology enable you to develop creatively and are there examples of the technology obstructing or preventing your creative flow?

To make our 2 minutes opening of the film, we used a digital video camcorder. We took coupe of shots, just to be in the safe side and if error were made in any shot, the same type of shot can be replaced with of the mistaken shot. Because we did filming in school, and outside the campus we were not allowed to film at the Duffus Castle, (which is outside the campus) due to restrictions. This prevented us from filming, but lucky we found some other place in the campus which looks similar the Michael Kirk, which we were looking for, the creepiness of the places had the same feeling every time we looked at it. So then we finally decided to film at the Michael Kirk. Also the filming tools which we had were only the video camcorder and a tripod, unlike real professional tools, such as for a tracking shot we did not have the tracks, to hold the camera firmly, and so we found it difficult to film using a tracking shot, where Henri the character walks towards the church (Michael Kirk).

How did you respond to the initial brief with the audience in mind?

Our task was to create a 2min. opening of a movie. We started by choosing our genre which was a horror drama however our opening scene did not match the genre; therefore we had to change the genre to teen drama. We made it look like a teen drama with a dark ambiance, such as the teen/horror drama Twilight. We wanted to aim our product to a wide audience by making our movie 12A, even if it contains a few violent scenes. For various reasons there are no sex or intimate scenes that are usually shown in teen dramas. We tried to replace those scenes by adding another genre, which was horror to make the movie as interesting and thrilling as possible like a good movie is.

How did your analysis and research into the type of film you selected impact on the creative process in pre-production?

Before we picked the genre we watched different trailers with different genres to inspire us. We watched a wide variety of horror trailers because that was the genre that we first chose, but then changed it to teen drama because we thought that we would address and attract a wide audience because of the popularity of teen dramas, such as New Moon which has been played in nearly over 4,000 theatres.
After a lot of changes of the genre our group came together to brainstorm and that’s how the genre teen/horror drama came up. We started filming and had no problems with continuity of our filming and no big conflict in our group anymore.
Before we started filming we inspired ourselves by watching several teen drama trailers and then combining them together with the horror trailers we watched and as a result we came up with the idea of the genre teen/horror drama that is a very unusual combination. While watching a lot of trailers we analyzed them, and the genre to understand how they are represented.

In filming and editing, how did you ensure that the meaning would be apparent to the audience? What creative decisions did you make in planning, rehearsing, filming and editing that were influenced by your sense of the audience and possible layers of interpretation?

To ensure that the meaning would be apparent to the audience, we kept the storyline fairly simple, and not too complicated. So they can easily understand it. To do this, we edited our opening scene visibly, so all the scenes are in order instead of random scenes at different times. This would have confusing the audience and therefore they would not be able to understand what is happening in the scene. We rehearsed a lot the scene where one of the characters gets slapped, but to give it an real effect to the audience, we took the shot from different angles, and so we decided that we are going to keep 2 different angle shots for the slapping scene.

How did the audience respond when you trialled aspects of your film? Are there a variety of possible interpretations of your opening sequence that will depend on the cultural situation of the viewer?

When we produced our 2 minute opening scene we wanted to get feedback from our audience which were our classmates and teacher. The feedback that we were worried about the most was from our Teacher Mrs.Downes. The feedback that we got from her were that the scenes were interesting, graphics were good; however these were the good feedbacks but the bad ones were that our opening scene contained too much black and white, the story through the scenes were boring and also that our title did not match the genre of the film. So we improved on these factors and changed our title of the film. My group, which I was working with, was multicultural such as Ahmed who is originally from Pakistan, Henri who is from Switzerland. I think that because we had a multicultural group and have seen different films we had different ideas that we had combined to make our 2 min opening scene. I think that people from different countries and cultures will have different views on the film that will also make a big impact.

Remaking of the Movie Logo

According to the critics, the style of our movie logo does not suit our opening movie. They find the the movie logo too plain to use.

So we have decided to remake our movie title logo using PhotoShop. This time we have removed the bright red flower, kept the style of the title and added something that strongly relates with our opening scene, "the location where it happened!"

We took a picture of the church (Michael Kirk) and planned to use it some how for our movie logo.

After, i went on to a computer and played around with the picture of the church on Photoshop (picture 1). And realized that i could still give it a creepy look, by using some key elements such as picture effects and using some of my knowledge in PhotoShop. To make it look a bit more Professional and creepy, i also added some splatted blood on to the church using Photoshop (Picture 2). And underneath the title name I've added some brighter blood splatter effect using some brushes (Picture 3).

Because the background is black, I took the advantage and used the lasso tool then feathered out on each sides of the picture of the church. This will fade into the background of the picture and it will look a bit more creepier. (Picture 4)
